We signed our non-contingent contract in November 2015. We pushed the build out as far as we could (June 2016 completion) in fear that we would not be able to sell our previous home quickly...it sold in a day. We have been staying with my in-laws since 1/29/16 and I must admit, it has not been bad at all. It's actually been totally fine, BUT I am definitely ready for us to have our own space again. On 2/23/16, the construction officially began with the silt fence installation. :)
